An Unexpected Gift
I graduated from college with a substantial amount of student debt. So for my entire adult life finances have been a source of stress and anxiety. My husband and I got married two years after I graduated and committed to remaining faithful in tithing to the church while also aggressively paying down my college loans. It was really tough and disheartening at times. A few years into our marriage The Crossing did the ACTIVE prayer sermon series and my husband and I felt led to pray specifically about being able to pay off the debt early. At the time neither of us was anticipating a salary increase in our jobs or any other kind of financial gift. In fact we had just committed to supporting a child through one of our mission partners and we were getting ready to add our first child to our family. So if anything finances were about to be tougher.
After a couple of months of diligent prayer we were amazed at how God answered us. Two months after we began praying diligently about our debt, we found out that the car we owned was part of a lawsuit with the manufacturer that would result in a financial settlement allowing us to buy a new vehicle without increasing any kind of financial burden. We were thankful and praised God that he had provided a way for us to move to a safer car while also not accruing more debt. BUT THEN we were completely unexpectedly gifted a new car from a family member.
Within 6 months of beginning to pray and trust God with our finances, not just by giving, but by believing that God could and would provide everything we needed, we had a more reliable and long term car, AND the money from the manufacturer settlement to completely pay off my student debt.
We didn’t pray some secret special prayer, or give a certain amount of money in order to receive specific financial blessings from God, we just committed to believing that He would provided for us. And He did.
