Life Group Leader Guide

This Leader Guide will help you lead the conversation with your Life Group when discussing this week’s sermon.

Scripture

Life Group Leader Guide

This Leader Guide will help you lead the conversation with your Life Group when discussing this week’s sermon.

Scripture

Key Things You Heard

  • Engaging the Bible four or more days a week is the single most powerful predictor of spiritual growth. (Hawkins and Parkinson, 2007 and Geiger, Kelley, & Nation, 2012)
  • Graphe refers to the written Word of Jesus
  • Logos refers to the person of Jesus as the Word
  • Rehma refers to the spoken Word of God

Pray

Heavenly Father, Cause in each of us to recognize and realize that we cannot grow spiritually if we are not frequently engaged in God’s Word. Help us to be humble enough to admit that we often offer excuses instead of obeying. Allow the Holy Spirit to use our humility and time in the Word to make us more like Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Tweetable Moments

“Only once does the Bible talk about “knowing God’s will.” The emphasis is on doing God’s will.

“The simple barrier of opening the Bible up may be the final barrier to you engaging in God’s word.”

Questions for Conversation

Icebreaker: Tell the group when you last read God’s Word and how you applied it to your life. If you didn’t read His Word, what reason do you give for not reading it?

  • Mark Moore stated that “Only once does the Bible talk about “knowing God’s will. The emphasis is on doing God’s will. What does this tell you about the importance of the application of God’s Word? What are barriers that keep you from applying God’s Word daily in your life? What would it take to overcome these barriers? What are you willing to commit to this week to apply God’s Word in your life?
  • Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (Scripture here = graph, the written scriptures); Hebrews 4:12 (Word here = logos, referred to Jesus as the Word); and Ephesians 6:17 (Word here = rehma, and refers to the spoken Word of God.) What insight do these scriptures give you as you look closely at the meanings of the Greek words? Specifically, as you read Ephesians 6:17, what is the importance of memorizing scripture in relation to your spiritual growth and spiritual battles?
  • What do you think the difference is between reading the Bible and studying the Bible? How often do you read your Bible? How often do you study your Bible?
  • It might be fun, as a group, to see how many scriptures you can quote from memory.

Now Go Do It

Challenge: Mark Moore issued a challenge this week to read your Bible 5 minutes a day, five days a week, for one year. Will you accept this challenge? Start in the Book of James. Read one chapter a day. Read it a couple of times. Underline one verse in your Bible. Take that one verse and live it out today.
