Baptism

Life Group Leader Guide

This Leader Guide will help you lead the conversation with your Life Group when discussing this week’s sermon.

Baptism

Key Things You Heard

  • It’s my ticket on the ark. (1 Peter 3:20-21a)
  • It’s the proof of the promise. (Colossians 2:11-12)
  • It’s my spiritual cleansing. (Acts 22:16)
  • It’s my spiritual clothing (Galatians 3:27)
  • It’s my contact with the blood of Jesus. (Romans 6:3-4)
  • It’s how Jesus wants me to ask Him into my life. (Acts 9:17; 1 Peter 3:21)

Pray

Heavenly Father, You certainly are essential to us, and everything you ask us to do is our opportunity to show you that. Baptism is one of those things that speak volumes to us, to others, and to you. Let us see and understand the beautiful and beneficial things that happen to us, through faith, in following you in baptism. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Tweetable Moments

“The question today isn’t whether or not God sees you as essential…He does.  The question is whether or not you see Him that way.”

“If God is essential to me, then I can’t live in the margins or the minimums.”

Questions for Conversation

Icebreaker: Who is your all-time favorite movie character and why?

  • If you understand your relationship with God to be essential, how does that affect how you relate to Him? Give an example of how this was lived out in your life recently.
  • Read Matthew 28:18-20. This verse is known as the great commission. What are the three things that Jesus told his disciples to do based on this passage of scripture? Based on Jesus’ statement, would you say that baptism is non-essential? Why or why not.
  • Read Acts 2:36-39. What was the people’s response to Peter’s sermon? When the people asked, “Brothers, what shall we do? What instructions did Peter give? If you had been in the crowd that day, what would you have done? Would you say that baptism was considered essential to a person’s response to Jesus?
  • Reread the scriptures used in this week’s sermon. 1 Peter 3:20-21a; Colossians 2:11-12; Acts 22:16; Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3-4. How do these scriptures impact your view of baptism? Did you learn something that you didn’t know about baptism from these scriptures?

Now Go Do It

Challenge: Have you been baptized by immersion? If not, why don’t you call your Campus Pastor and scheduled your baptism? Another option, if there is a pool or body of water close, is to be baptized today, as part of your Life Group. Be sure to video the baptism and have your Life Group leader send it in so that we can all celebrate with you. (Video is not a biblical requirement. But seeing your baptism is a great encouragement, and a witness to many people of your decision.)
