Life Group Leader Guide

This Leader Guide will help you lead the conversation with your Life Group when discussing this week’s sermon.

Attitude

Life Group Leader Guide

This Leader Guide will help you lead the conversation with your Life Group when discussing this week’s sermon.

Attitude

Key Things You Heard

  • We give ourselves permission to hold on to the attitudes of the world.
  • Our attitudes need to be surrendered to our true identity, a follower of Jesus.
  • True repentance of prejudice doesn’t come easy.
  • The roots of our prejudices go down deeper than we think.

Pray

Heavenly Father, As followers of Jesus, we do not want to be people who hold on to worldly attitudes. We want to surrender them to Jesus. Yet, the world around us is so volatile. The opportunities are great for us to buy into these worldly arguments and sinful attitudes. So teach us to follow you. Change us from the inside out. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.

Tweetable Moments

“We might know the right thing. We might do the right thing. But until our hearts are changed, we will never be the right thing.”

“It’s time to start letting go of our prejudices before a big fish starts circling the boat.”

Questions for Conversation

Icebreaker:

  • Read Jonah 1:1-3 and 4:1-2. When did you experience a time in your life when you acted like you were right and God was wrong? How did you run away from God? What did it take to bring you to repentance?
  • Read Jonah chapters 2 and 4. If there wasn’t a chapter 2, what would you conclude about Jonah’s life? When you see Jonah’s response to Nineveh’s repentance in chapter 4, how do you view his prayer in Chapter 2? Have there been times in your life where your prayers of repentance don’t match your actions? Explain.
  • Read Jonah 4:11. Jerry asked two questions in his sermon this week. “Who do we think we are to stand in the way of our calling to demonstrate the love of Jesus to everyone we come in contact with?”And, “Who are we to give ourselves permission to hold on to the idolatry of our prejudices, while hypocritically claiming to follow Jesus?” How did those questions impact you and how should the answers to those questions change how you live?

Now Go Do It

Challenge: We all have a tendency to run from God. But God is a God of kindness. We run, and He pursues. Listen to Ben Stuart explain this dilemma in his RightNow Media broadcast of Jonah. https://www.rightnowmedia.org/Content/Series/467720?episode=1
